PEMF therapy explained: what a PEMF mat is and how people use it

What PEMF actually is, what's known from research, who should avoid it and what to look for in a home PEMF mat.

PEMF mats are one of the more unusual pieces of home recovery tech, and one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains what PEMF is, what's known about it and how people use a mat at home.

What does PEMF stand for?

PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. A PEMF device passes a pulsing electrical current through coils, which creates a magnetic field that rises and falls at a set frequency. In a PEMF mat, the coils are built into a mat you lie on, so the field covers a large part of your body.

Is it the same as a magnet or a TENS machine?

No. A static magnet produces a constant field, while PEMF pulses on and off. A TENS machine passes a small electrical current through pads on your skin; PEMF doesn't need skin contact and you don't usually feel anything.

What's known from research?

PEMF has been used in clinical settings for decades, and researchers have studied it for a range of uses, including bone healing and joint pain. Some systematic reviews, for example in knee osteoarthritis, have reported improvements in pain and function, but studies vary widely in devices, frequencies and session lengths, and PEMF remains an area of ongoing research. A home PEMF mat is a wellness device, not a medical treatment, and if you have a health condition you should speak to your doctor about the options that are right for you.

How people use a PEMF mat at home

  • Where: on a bed, sofa or the floor, lying on top of the mat.
  • How long: sessions often last 10 to 30 minutes, following the manufacturer's guidance.
  • When: many people use it in the evening to wind down, or on rest days.
  • Frequency: mats let you choose a frequency. Lower frequencies are often used in the evening and higher ones during the day, but follow your device's instructions.

The ThermoLab PEMF Crystal Mat

The ThermoLab PEMF Crystal Mat covers the full body at 190 × 80cm. Four PEMF coils run along its length and deliver adjustable sine-wave pulses from 1 to 30Hz, controlled from a handheld digital controller. A layer of tourmaline, white crystal and amethyst sits on top. Each mat is made to order and dispatched within 4 to 6 weeks.

Who should not use PEMF?

Don't use a PEMF mat without your doctor's approval if you:

  • Have a pacemaker, defibrillator, insulin pump or any other implanted electronic device
  • Are pregnant
  • Have epilepsy
  • Have an active cancer, are having treatment or have any other serious medical condition

What to look for when buying

  • Coverage: full-body mats suit whole-body sessions; smaller pads suit one area.
  • Adjustable frequency and intensity, with clear instructions.
  • Build quality and warranty: mats are a long-term purchase, so look for a proper UK warranty and support.
  • Honest marketing: be wary of any brand promising to cure illnesses.

Pairing PEMF with other recovery tools

Many people use PEMF alongside heat and light, for example an evening sauna blanket session followed by time on the mat before bed. See our home recovery routine for ideas, or ask our team whether PEMF is right for you.

This guide is general information, not medical advice. If you're pregnant, have a heart condition, a medical device or any health concerns, speak to your GP before using heat or light therapy.
